For the connection between the shaft and the rudder blade

Hydraulic nuts and linkage on the FREEM

PLACE: France

Area: Off Shore

For the shaft-rudder blade coupling operations on FREMM frigates and to secure the fit on the conical shaft, FPT has designed and manufactured a specific set of 220-ton hydraulic clamps operating at a pressure of 1,500 bar. The hydraulic clamps are equipped with a safety ring to maintain the desired preload.
The complete hydraulic system also includes a series of 1500-bar lever pumps to supply the ring itself and the conical surface of the shaft.

For the project, the fasteners and linkages for the shaft lines—which run from the gearbox to the propeller—were also manufactured. The fasteners were machined from 30NCD12 quenched and tempered steel with a DACROMET external coating, a non-galvanic coating process based on zinc, aluminum, and chromium, used for corrosion protection of screws, nuts, springs, and other metal components.
